Back by popular demand, we're going all by-the-numbers on headlines today. What, don't think numbers are as attention-grabbing as words? Consider the humble No. 29. Best known as the last age marker between the outer limits of youth and full-on adult responsibility, 29 stands out this week as the oh-so close victory margin in a Milton-area riding that flipped from the Tories to the Liberals after a closer look at the votes. Snatching that win from the jaws of defeat still leaves Mark Carney's Liberals achingly shy of a majority government, however. Maybe, a Liberal-sought recount in another close race in Windsor (the number there is 77) will help close the gap. I'm Greg Van Moorsel of The London Free Press, your digest curator.

  • $10 million: Street value of 100 bricks of cocaine that a Toronto trucker tried to smuggle into Canada through Sarnia. He got 10 years in prison.

  • $5 million: Value of a winning Ontario lottery ticket that was claimed only after a warning went out that the oprhaned voucher was about to expire.

  • 120,000: Possible Ontario job losses by next year, with southwestern cities hardest-hit, in a new report divining the toll of the trade war with the U.S.

  • 700+: Jobs being cut by General Motors at its Oshawa truck plant, the latest blow to our auto industry amid the trade war's market uncertainties.

  • 107: In years, age of a Windsor streetcar whose improbable run -- from rusty relic to museum showpiece -- has taken a dramatic new turn.

  • 100 to 125: New measles cases being reported each week in Ontario, its top doctor warning the outbreak fallout shows no sign of ending soon.

  • 23: Percentage plunge in April home sales in Toronto, one of Canada's hottest markets, amid trade war angst. Sales are down in London, too.

  • 12: Weeks it took a then-young North Bay man to learn Morse code. At age 100, the Battle of the Atlantic veteran says he still remembers it. His story.

  • 4: Canadian cardinals, two from Ontario, taking part in the conclave to elect a new pope. All the latest on the secret voting that begins today.

  • 2: Landfills filling up in a township near Cornwall, where some residents are balking at see-through bags to keep unwanted trash out of the dumps.

  • 1: Unusual labour grievance rejected, after a federal public servant cited his "earth-based spirituality" for an exemption from a COVID-19 shot.
