In just a month, on June 7, Civil Discourse turns three. It doesn’t seem like I’ve been writing the newsletter for that long, but it also feels like we’ve lived through decades together. I started Civil Discourse to help people understand the times we are living through and to share information and context I acquired during 25 years at the Justice Department. I wanted readers to walk away from every post with the kind of power that comes from knowledge. That’s still my goal. (Well, except for the nights with chicken pictures.) Politicians may talk down to the voters who elect them. Donald Trump may successfully sell a lot of snake oil to his base. But I still believe that Americans from all walks of life are fundamentally smart people who make good decisions if they have accurate information. That’s a big “if.” We live in the era of disinformation, and figuring out how to get facts and analysis in the hands of people who have been led astray is one of the major challenges we face as we work to get the country back on the right track. I hope we can continue to play a role in that. I love hearing your stories about planting seeds with friends, family members, and coworkers and the surprising way they can take root. As a reader told me last month, “I red-pilled Grandma Jane.” I hope you’ll stick around with me for this next year of Civil Discourse. We have a lot to do. Finally, A programming note: We’ve got two kids graduating on opposite ends of the country in the next two weeks, so I may be around a little less than usual, but I’ll definitely be here if anything major happens. Keep me in your thoughts—our two oldest sons are home tending the house and the chickens, which almost always means I come home to a sweet hen who has managed to stash a nest somewhere and is ready to hatch more baby chicks. I’ve warned them sternly against letting that happen this time! Please feel free to share the newsletter widely if you find it helpful. Except for the “Five Questions” feature, all of the content is and will remain free. Knowledge really is power.
