With Triston Casas out for the year, Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro will man first base for the Red Sox. Alex Cora doesn’t have immediate plans to ask Rafael Devers to prepare for exposure to the position.
But on Wednesday, the Red Sox manager softened his public stance on the subject. One day after Cora said he had no plans to broach the possibility of Devers at first, he reframed his answer in less definitive form.
“Obviously, things might change,” Cora said. “We got to give Romy and Toro the chance to play. We will. . . Let’s give them a chance, see what happens, and then if it doesn’t work out, and that’s not what we hope, then we’ll look for other avenues to improve.”
Cora reiterated that he wants to leave Devers alone as the designated hitter for now so that he can build upon a routine that has yielded elite production in that role, but he opened the door to revisiting the subject in the future.
