Budget cuts, staff layoffs and the elimination of local field offices are all part of the Trump administration’s plans to restructure the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The proposals, along with a flurry of executive orders and policy reversals pushed out during Trump’s first 100 days, are threatening housing assistance programs and renter protections in cities across the US.

For landlords and property owners, the Trump era offers an opportunity to push for relaxing regulations that they say stand in the way of affordability, contributor Patrick Sisson writes. Housing advocates, meanwhile, are bracing to face increasing housing instability with fewer resources, particularly as state and local budgets are stretched thin.
