American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been declared Pope Leo XIV after white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel in the early hours of this morning, our time.

He is the first American pope — breaking a taboo against the country due to its significant geopolotical power. He is 69 years old and considered a moderate.

The 267th pontiff inherits a church that Pope Francis tried to make more inclusive.

"The pope who blessed Rome gave his blessing to the world, to the whole world that morning on Easter Sunday," Pope Leo XIV said in his first address.

"Allow me to follow up on that same blessing: God loves us. God loves you all and evil will not prevail."
