It's looking sunny and warm this Mother's Day weekend. What a joy! Celebrate this lovely spring weather with our list of things to do, see, eat and savour in the London region this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

THE FIVE

Mother's Day or any day, brunch is always a good time. Here are a few picks for a posh mid-morning meal.

  • Ironwood Kitchen + Bar. This restaurant in the northeast end has locally-inspired takes on all the brunch classics. Pop by 1255 Kilally Road from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Blueberry lemon French toast and mimosas for the table anyone?
  • The Mule. This funky Mexican restaurant and tequila bar on Richmond Row has a bunch of brunch offerings for adventurous palates. Try their feature brunch taco or go with the classic huevos rancheros.

  • The Early Bird. This self-described 'fine diner' has been serving up from-scratch breakfast and brunch staples for years. Stop by 353 Talbot Street to get your fill.
  • Waldos on King. Swing by from noon until 2 p.m. on Sundays to catch this longtime London restaurant's brunch service. There's an omelette bar, salmon crepe and croque madam to choose from. This weekend, there's a three-course, prix fixe Mother's Day menu from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for $45 per person.
  • Craft Farmacy. Stop by this celebrated Wharncliffe Road eatery for prix fixe brunch starting at 11 a.m. on Sundays. $33 gets you an entree, such as shakshuka or eggs benedict, some scones and a drink.

FOR THE KIDS

Here are a few family-friendly activities to explore this weekend.

  • Emergency Preparedness Day. Bring the little ones to Fanshawe College's main Oxford Street campus on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a full day of activities, prizes and emergency preparedness tips. Explore emergency vehicles and chat with first responders, take a picture at the photo wall or grab a snack at one of the food trucks.
  • Port Stanley Terminal Rail. How about a scenic train ride pass the time? Mom's ride for half-price on this St. Thomas to Port Stanley locomotive on Sunday. Kids' tickets are $9 and regular adult tickets are $15. Snag some tickets online.

FREE PRESS FAVE

  • Our Jennifer Bieman had a lovely dinner at Abruzzi Ristorante not too long ago. "It's a shame I haven't been to this King Street mainstay sooner. Start with some charred broccolini, it was delicious. Their veal Milanese was a very filling entree, full of bright flavours." This Italian-inspired restaurant is open Monday to Thursday starting at 5 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

  • SummerFest is coming to the St. Thomas Columbus Club, 265 Wellington Street, on June 20 and 21. Catch the fish fry and dance on the Friday night and go and see Chicago tribute band Transit Chicago on Saturday starting at 8:30 p.m. Tickets to the Saturday night show are $30 in advance or $40 at the gate. The event supports the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank.
