With my fiftieth birthday approaching, I pondered how to celebrate. Friends were also facing milestone birthdays. One — soon to be sixty — booked a Mediterranean cruise. Another — thirty imminent — had saved up for a week in Hawaii. A third was looking into a posh spa in Arizona.
None of those ideas appealed to me. I felt like Goldilocks, unable to find just the right bowl of porridge. My Mediterranean-cruise friend offered sage advice: “Pay attention. You’ll know it when you see it. Just pay attention.”
