What's the latest: Iran is vowing to retaliate for US strikes against three key nuclear sites across the country. US President Donald Trump over the weekend ordered the facilities be hit, dragging Washington back into a Middle East conflict and escalating the deadly situation between Israel and Iran.

• One of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's close advisors is warning the "game isn't over". Ali Shamkhani says the US's strikes may have damaged Iran's nuclear enrichment program, but he insists some nuclear material remains in Tehran's hands.
• Global energy supplies may be under threat as well. Iranian state media is reporting officials there are considering whether to close a key shipping lane that, among other things, transports a fifth of the world's oil and gas.
• The US is not taking these threats lightly. Non-essential embassy staff in Lebanon have been evacuated, US Homeland Security is warning of an elevated threat of attacks, and police patrols have been stepped up in major US cities.
• The UN Security Council has called an emergency session. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says negotiations must take place to avoid the region "descending into a rathole of retaliation".
• Politically, the decision to green light the strikes is proving divisive. Democrats and even some Republicans have expressed doubts over whether Donald Trump has the authority to strike Iran, and the president is not appreciating the feedback.
