| | Good morning. Was the U.S. intervention in Iran over the weekend the right thing to do? What happens next? Those are the two biggest questions on our minds as we navigate the Chicagoland heat this broiling Monday morning. Sunday, we offered a variety of pieces on the Middle East, including two Opinion articles from entirely opposite viewpoints: one focused on the conflict with Iran being a "just" war from the Israeli perspective, another focused on the civilians caught in the middle. Our editorial changed at the very last moment when President Donald Trump began dropping bombs on Saturday night, rendering our prior editorial moot. We had to rewrite it in a matter of moments and you will have to let us know what you thought of the result. Beyond that one issue, today the editorial board looks at the state of world tourism (we talked to some folks meeting in Chicago) and also at the mayoral election in New York. We offer a cautionary tale. Also in our Opinion section: Clarence Page writes about Donald Trump and Juneteenth, Dr. Anand Kumar explores what voters should expect to be told about political candidates' health and Dan Tully explores a question both perennial and timely: What should servicemen and women do if they feel an order from their Commander in Chief puts them in conflict with the oath they have sworn to the U.S. Constitution? A serious question for serious times. Have a great week and please do all you can to stay cool. — Chris Jones, editorial page editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter | | Many Iranians and Israelis, like me, who have left their country have loved ones back home. We afraid that the conflict will go on for weeks. | | | Israel is going after only military targets that support the Iranian nuclear program and enable the regime’s ability to attack Israel. | | | Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s oppressive and theocratic Iranian regime, which has fought proxy wars by propping up the likes of Hamas and Hezbollah, should not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. | | | Illinois tourism officials are praying the Trump chill doesn’t last. | | | If New Yorkers are frustrated with Mayor Eric Adams, they should be careful not to trade him for someone who makes governance even harder. Trust us – we’ve been there. | | | Juneteenth came and went Thursday, but curiously something seemed to be missing from the annual celebration: a cordial salute from the president of the United States. | | | Medical information relevant to the position should be available to voters well in advance for the sake of their decision-making. | | | American military members are trained at understanding the conditions under which it is lawful to use force. | | | |
