The Best Movies of 2025, So Far |
What’s the best movie of 2025 so far? Richard Lawson can think of 11 titles that fit the bill. His list is dotted with titles that skew mainstream and art house alike, presented in a variety of languages. The undisputed studio champion, though, is Sinners. “Ryan Coogler uses all the resources provided to him by a major studio to make something rich and a little risky, a bold commercial entertainment that also asks audiences to confront the brutality of history,” Lawson writes. “Sensual, gory, and full of song, Sinners is the rare contemporary Hollywood movie that reminds us of the industry’s once glorious, now faded capacity for invention and urgency. Many more like it, please.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Savannah Walsh sits for a rollicking, career-spanning conversation with Christine Baranski; Esther Zuckerman explains the curious (and illegible, unless you’re British) ending of 28 Years Later; Johnny Depp resurfaces in a new interview; and Hugo Wintrebert recounts Kim Kardashian’s emotional testimony at the trial of the burglars who robbed her Paris hotel room. |
