Good afternoon. It’s Monday, June 23.

In today's newsletter:

  • The head of Alaska’s Department of Corrections recently acknowledged “bumps in the road” as an Anchorage facility accepted around 40 immigration detainees from outside the state under an agreement with ICE.

  • The humble Yup’ik mother and midwife known as Matushka Olga is now officially a saint in the Orthodox church, following a historic two-day gathering that drew hundreds to her home village of Kwethluk in Western Alaska.

  • Several large fires in Interior Alaska flared up over the weekend, triggering evacuations and lengthy road closures and delays that continued into Monday.

With an assist from Anchorage restaurants, local artists Joshua Demain and Yulia Kalagaeva collected 3,000 oyster shells to create a new multimedia installation. The piece, called “Obsessions,” is on view at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art through Friday.

Anchorage weather

It's overcast today with a high near 58 degrees and a chance of scattered rain showers. There's a chance of rain on Tuesday as well, but we should see partly sunny skies later this week. Daytime temperatures will hover in the low to mid-60s for the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
