Your lips need protection from the sun, too

Our pick for best smooth and invisible balm, with SPF: Coola Original Liplux Lip Balm Sunscreen
Michael Murtaugh/NYT Wirecutter

It can be hard to find a good SPF lip balm — most of the options we’ve tested over the years either tasted terrible, left a heavy white cast, or were so gummy they were almost unwearable. So we were delighted to find this lightweight, buttery-smooth, and moisturizing one. This solid stick of SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen was the unanimous top choice of our testers, thanks to its lovely, luxe formula (that notably doesn’t look like sunscreen). Plus, the chic packaging makes this $12 balm feel like a steal.

Plus: The problem with SPF makeup

If your foundation has SPF in it, great. But unfortunately, you shouldn’t rely on that alone to protect your skin from the sun. In order to get sufficient sun protection, you’d need to apply a ridiculous amount of makeup. Instead, your best sun-protection strategy is to put on your preferred face sunscreen — and allow it to fully set — before applying any foundation, powder, and so on.

One last thing: A sun-protective rash guard that’s surprisingly stylish

For beach and pool days when you’ll be getting lots of sun exposure, a long-sleeved UPF-rated rash-guard suit — and plenty of sunscreen — are your best bet. This sleek one-piece is by far the most stylish rash guard we’ve found. The zip-up style features contrast piping that offers full coverage and stay-put support. Quipped one tester: “It says ‘I care deeply about sun safety, but I also happen to be a Bond girl.’”

And one more thing for sun protection: a breezy, surfer-approved sun hat.
