Fighting for journalism and profitable news media British Journalism Awards 2025: Channel 4 News leads winnersGaza: Doctors Under Attack win is "vindication" after BBC limbo, and Marie Colvin Award winner receives huge standing ovationHello from the team at Press Gazette on Monday, 15 December. Here’s our daily round-up of media news, sponsored by PA Media. The Press Gazette team has just about recovered from the British Journalism Awards on Thursday night - a really special one. Channel 4 News was the big winner, taking home News Provider of the Year for the second year running and winning the most awards when combined with Channel 4. Presenter Cathy Newman was named Journalist of the Year for her years-long work on the Church of England abuse scandal. The next biggest winners in terms of quantity were The Guardian, and The Times and Sunday Times. Highlights of the night included Newman sharing a statement from one of the John Smyth victims on stage as she collected her first (but not only) award of the night and Keaton Stone speaking powerfully about his seven-year long investigation into Mohamed Al-Fayed. Stay tuned this week for interviews with both of them about their investigations. See the full list of winners (and links to their winning work) here. We also had what felt like an unusually high number of highly commended finalists, which I think indicates the strength of the shortlists in many categories. We saw an incredible standing ovation for former Guardian Gaza correspondent Malak A Tantesh as she collected the Marie Colvin Award (the New Journalist of the Year prize was still to come). We’ll have a full interview with Tantesh about how it felt to win the award and the harrowing challenges of reporting from the Gaza war zone later this week. Another popular winner was the team behind the Gaza: Doctors Under Attack documentary that was left in limbo by the BBC for months and eventually broadcast by Channel 4. Dom spoke to filmmaker Ramita Navai about how distressing the whole process was and why winning the Foreign Journalism award felt like vindication. |
