Greetings,

Many of us first got to know Rob Reiner as the lovable character Michael Stivic, the liberal hippie foil to his bigoted father-in-law Archie Bunker on Norman Lear's groundbreaking series "All in the Family."

But through the years, Reiner's work behind the camera as a filmmaker touched generation after generation, traversing and exploring the human condition. As my colleague Adam Chitwood put so poignantly in his "Reel to Real" newsletter this morning, "while navigating several different genres, each of his films has one thing in common: a big beating heart."

The tributes continued to pour in today from around the world after the unspeakable murder of Reiner and his wife, Michele, was first reported Sunday night. Their son, Nick, was arrested and charged Monday with the murders of his parents. He is being held without bail.

Everyday fans to literary giants grieved. Stephen King, author of “Misery” and the novella “The Body,” of which “Stand by Me” was an adaptation, remembered Reiner as both a friend and colleague. “I’m horrified and saddened by the death of Rob Reiner and Michele,” King wrote. “Wonderful friend, political ally and brilliant filmmaker (including two of mine). Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me.”

In one of his last interviews before his death in 2020 at 98, Reiner's father, the legendary actor, author and comedian, Carl Reiner, said: "The only thing that really matters in life is your progeny, the people who come after you, the people you send out to the world. They’re either toxic or nontoxic.

“Estelle and I raised three children and she was around to see how good they were. But ... since she’s left, these three kids have become icons.”

May Rob Reiner's memory be a blessing for us all.
