Is it true that Christmas juries don’t convict? That was the conventional wisdom in my U.S. Attorney’s office, although as Adam reminded me during our chat, Jeffrey Epstein’s co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell was, in fact, convicted by a Christmas (December) jury. The trial of Wisconsin state court Judge Hannah Dugan is underway in federal court in Wisconsin, where the local U.S. Attorney charged her with knowingly concealing a person from arrest and obstructing an official proceeding, in connection with an incident where federal agents attempted to make (and ultimately did make) an arrest of an undocumented person, who was subsequently deported. Adam has been in court from the start and shares all the details of the trial with us, including the defense lawyer’s killer comment in opening statment that suggests at a very potent defense and a surprising appearance from one of Judge Dugan’s fellow judges who took the stand for the government and testified against her. We’ll follow this case closely—the federal government's tenuous prosecution of a state court judge has implications for democracy that extend beyond this case. Best of all, Adam has promised to come back and share more details about the trial with us after the verdict is in.
