Tell Congress: Stop Trump's Martial Law Power Grab

Mother Jones Reader,

JD Vance and Stephen Miller reportedly discussed suspending habeas corpus and using the Insurrection Act against protesters.

According to recent reporting, Vice President JD Vance pushed for deploying the military on American streets during anti-ICE protests in Minnesota, while Stephen Miller pushed for suspending habeas corpus for undocumented immigrants — a move that could strip people of their right to challenge detention in court.

This is a blueprint for authoritarian power: soldiers against protesters, deportations without meaningful judicial review, and constitutional rights treated as obstacles to Trump's agenda.

Tell Congress: "Launch immediate public hearings into the Trump administration's plans to suspend habeas corpus and invoke the Insurrection Act against protesters. Block any attempt to suspend habeas corpus without constitutional authority, prohibit the use of federal troops to suppress lawful protest, and protect due process, immigrant rights, and the First Amendment."

Add Your Name

Habeas corpus is one of the oldest protections against unlawful government detention. The right to protest is at the heart of the First Amendment. If a president can threaten either whenever people resist his policies, no one's freedom is safe.

The danger is especially clear for immigrants, protesters, journalists, and communities already targeted by Trump's enforcement agenda. Once the government claims the power to disappear people into detention without meaningful court review, abuse becomes almost inevitable.

Public pressure matters. Reporting suggests even some inside the White House worried about the backlash to using the Insurrection Act. That means raising the political cost now can help stop these plans before they return.

Add your name and demand Congress stop Trump's martial law power grab before constitutional rights are shredded.

Thanks for everything you do.
