We had so many wonderful celebrations during our last week of school! Congratulations to our 6th grade class on their promotion to middle school. We are so proud of their hard work, growth, and accomplishments throughout their years at Bucknell. Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog!

Dear Bucknell Families,
As we close another incredible school year, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to each of you. This year has been filled with growth, innovation, achievement, and connection, and none of it would have been possible without the dedication, support, and commitment of our entire Bucknell community.
Together, we have celebrated remarkable accomplishments that reflect the strength, resilience, and excellence of our students, staff, families, and partners. Some of our most notable successes this year include:
✨ Launching Fairfax County Public Schools' first public Montessori program.
✨ Partnering with Virginia Tech to create our Think a Bit Lab, welcoming students from across Fairfax County to explore innovation, coding, problem-solving, and future-ready skills.
✨ Focusing intentionally on supporting our multilingual learners, resulting in an 18% increase in English Learner proficiency and a 20% increase in students meeting Virginia Department of Education English Learner Progress expectations.
✨ Increasing SOL performance across every assessment and every student subgroup, with our largest gains in Science, which increased by an incredible 32%.
✨ Providing fresh food and resources to more than 300 families each month through our Free Family Food Market, strengthening our commitment to supporting the whole child and the whole family.
✨ Establishing a new community partnership with Alfred Street Baptist Church to expand opportunities, resources, and support for our students and families.
✨ Taking more than 800 students, staff, and family members on our schoolwide family field trip, creating unforgettable memories and strengthening our Bucknell family.
✨ Engaging more than 200 students in after-school clubs, helping students build confidence, develop new interests, strengthen relationships, and deepen their sense of belonging.
While these accomplishments are certainly worth celebrating, what I am most proud of is the spirit of our school community. Every day, I witnessed students striving to do their best, staff members going above and beyond, families partnering with us, and community members investing in our shared success.
As we celebrate the many successes of this year, we also take time to recognize and honor two remarkable members of our Bucknell family who are retiring. Thank you to Carleta Waytes, our dedicated ECCB teacher, and Reina Castillo, our exceptional Building Supervisor, for their years of service, care, and commitment to our students and community. Their impact will be felt for years to come.
As we head into summer, I hope you take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming you back in the fall as we continue building on the momentum of this extraordinary year.

Summer is the perfect time for students to slow down, observe, and wonder about the natural world around them. Simple activities like collecting leaves, keeping a nature journal, identifying plants, or noticing patterns in nature help children build curiosity, creativity, and early scientific thinking. Through observation and exploration, students begin asking meaningful questions about the world around them.
El verano es el momento perfecto para que los estudiantes se detengan, observen y se maravillen con el mundo natural que los rodea. Actividades sencillas como recolectar hojas, llevar un diario de la naturaleza, identificar plantas o notar patrones en la naturaleza ayudan a los niños a desarrollar curiosidad, creatividad y habilidades iniciales de pensamiento científico. Summer is a time for students to explore the natural environment and expand on their learning. Students may find interest in the activities below:
- hike in the woods or up hills and mountains
- pitch a tent or build a campfire
- search for invertebrates
- build a fort or a lean-to in the woods
- identify some constellations or watch a meteor shower
- keep a nature journal
- pick fresh berries and bake a pie
- go for a night hike with a flashlight
- plant and care for their own garden
- identify birds by their songs or through binoculars
- learn the names of the plants in their yard and neighborhood, and the birds, insects, and other animals that are connected to those plants
Most of the activities listed above not only require going out of doors, but use movement with the practice of gross and small motor skills. They call for creativity and problem solving. Some involve measurement skills and learning new safety procedures. Others teach responsibility. They all involve use of the senses—in brand new ways for some children—and an observation of the natural world.
This observation of natural phenomena—plant cycles, animal behavior, weather, changing light, or the movement of water—helps to foster wonder in children. This may arouse curiosity and inquisitiveness about the natural world. This often leads to questions that begin the investigative process—the first step of the scientific method.
This may lead to some inquisitive questions you or your child may have:
- How long between flowers and fruit on our apple tree?
- Why do the size and shape of shadows change throughout the day?
- What is that bird communicating when it suddenly changes its song?
- Why does that bee visit this flower but not that one?

Families of rising middle school students are invited to attend Partnering with Your Child’s Middle School, a virtual session hosted by the FCPS Family and School Partnerships Office. Families will learn ways to stay connected to their student’s learning and maintain strong family-school partnerships throughout middle school. Sessions will be offered on Monday, August 3, at noon and Thursday, August 6, at 7 p.m. Please see the flyer for registration details.

Instructional Services is supporting student learning over the summer. Digital and print resources are being curated on the Summer Learning Resources webpage for students and families to review and practice previously taught content throughout the summer months.
Resources are organized by grade level and aligned to the learning students experienced during the school year. Families can access the materials at any time to review concepts, practice skills, or explore new ideas at home. Additional resources will continue to be added throughout June.
Schools are requested to share the Summer Learning Resources webpage with families on their school website and newsletter as a resource to support summer learning and engagement.

Fairfax County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services will continue providing summer meals to support children and families when school is not in session. Free meals are available to all children and teens 18 years of age and younger at designated FCPS summer meal sites, regardless of income or school enrollment.
