Pedestrian Path Closure Behind Long Bridge Aquatics and Fitness Center

LBAC - Pedestrian Path Detour - June 2026

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), as part of the Long Bridge Project, will implement a temporary closure of the pedestrian path behind the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center. The path will be detoured to the sidewalk along the front of the building.

Access to outdoor exercise equipment in the rear of the Aquatics Center will remain open
during this path closure.

This path closure is necessary to establish the work zone along the existing railroad corridor.

Pedestrians and cyclists are urged to use caution when traveling through the area. For public and work crew safety, please follow all posted signage and directions from on-site personnel. Learn more about the Long Bridge Project on the project page.

Transitway Extension Project Update

TETPC - Crystal Drive Paving

Paving for Bus-Only Lanes

On Thursday, June 18, the Transitway Extension project will begin repaving and installing new markings to convert the northbound curb lane on Crystal Drive and 12th Street South between South Clark Street and 15th Street South to bus-only lanes.

Curb side parking spaces on the northbound side of Crystal Drive/12th Street South will be permanently removed. (Street parking was previously temporarily reinstated during Phase 2 construction of the Transitway project, with the promise that it will close again closer to bus service implementation.)

The project is also installing new street marks on 12th Street South from South Eads Street to South Hayes Street to convert lanes for bus-only travel.

Next Stop - Transit Improvements

As the Transitway project nears completion, 12th Street South will reopen between South Fern Street and South Eads Street. In its new configuration, the center lanes will be designated for bus travel, with two new transit stations to serve passengers with shelters, benches, and real-time arrival information.

After the project is completed, WMATA will redirect the northbound Metrobus A1X via Crystal Drive and 12th Street South to Pentagon City. The southbound service to Braddock Road Metro will continue on South Hayes Street, Army Navy Drive, and South Eads Street until the neighboring 15th Street/Clark-Bell Street Realignment project is complete.
