A Fantastic Finish to a Wonderful Year!

Throughout this short week, Lane Lions of all ages marked the end of the 2025-26 school year with celebrations of all sorts.

The centerpiece was Tuesday’s 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony for our oldest lions who will be moving on to middle school next year. It included a clap-out by the younger students, the presentation of certificates, and a small reception for families afterwards. Here are just a few pictures from that morning.

Second grade celebrated the school year and the coming summer with a family picnic, complete with yard games, beach balls and leis, and food.

Lane’s ESOL teachers Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs. Yamamura celebrated their “graduates” from the ESOL program.

Student Ambassadors came to school early on Wednesday, the last day, to "Chalk the Walk" with positive messages and good wishes for the coming summer break.

At the end of the last day, there was dancing in the streets – or at least in the hallways – as students made their way to their transportation home. There were lots of cheers but also a few tears and lots and lots of hugs. Lane staff said goodbye in style with its annual last-day clap-out as students left the building and the buses pulled away.

A Year-End Message from Mrs. Opie

As we close another incredible school year, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Lane Elementary families for your trust, partnership, and unwavering support. It has been a privilege to work alongside you as we nurtured, challenged, and celebrated the growth of every one of our Lions.

This year has been filled with tremendous accomplishments, and we could not be prouder of our students. Across the school, we have seen growth in many areas, especially in reading, mathematics, and science. Our students and staff worked hard every day, and that dedication is reflected in the results.

  • Grades 1 through 6 demonstrated High Growth and High Achievement on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment.
  • Nearly all (96.7%) of our kindergarten students met the benchmark on their End-of-Year Math Assessment (EMAS).
  • We saw significant increases in our Math and Reading SOL pass rates.
  • We have already begun planning our next four-year Strategic Plan with an ambitious goal of reaching 95% achievement in the years ahead.

While we celebrate these accomplishments, what makes us most proud is the growth, perseverance, kindness, and joy demonstrated by each and every Lion throughout the year. Our students continue to inspire us, and we are honored to be part of their educational journey.

As summer begins, I encourage you to take time to relax, make memories, and enjoy family and friends. We will continue sharing summer engagement opportunities and activities in the coming weeks, so please stay connected with us. Our school office will remain open during the summer from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Friday. (The office is closed today for the Juneteenth holiday and will be closed on Friday, July 3, for Independence Day.)

Thank you again for an amazing year. We wish all of our Lions and their families a safe, joyful, and well-deserved summer break. We already look forward to welcoming everyone back in August for another year of learning, growth, and success.

Until then, enjoy every moment and have a wonderful summer!

With gratitude and Lion Pride,

Ebony Opie
Principal, Lane Elementary School

Can You Help Tend Our Garden This Summer?

Our school garden has been growing beautifully this spring, thanks to our students' green thumbs, and we want to make sure it stays healthy and vibrant throughout the summer. The Garden Team is asking for your help!

We're looking for families who would be willing to sign up to water our precious plants during the summer break. We have plants that we plan to harvest in the fall, so water and TLC are essential. It's a wonderful way to connect with nature and contribute to our school community.

The school will provide the equipment. You’ll just need to pick up the water key in the front office, do the watering, and return the key. There’s even a dinosaur sprinkler that you and your family can use while you're here! You can have a blast staying cool while making sure our garden gets the water it needs.

If you're interested in helping out, please pick the dates that work best for you on our Sign-Up Genius electronic sign-up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4AAEAA2DA0F4C52-64419375-summer#/. We’ll provide all the necessary information and instructions.

Thank you so much for your support in keeping our school garden thriving!

FCPS Calendar Survey Closes Monday

FCPS values your input as we plan future school calendars. On Friday, June 5, all caregivers and FCPS staff should have received an email from noreply@fcps.edu containing a unique link to complete the FCPS Calendar Survey.

Your feedback matters. Please take a few minutes to share your priorities and perspectives by Monday, June 22, at 11:59 p.m.

Your individual responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with school staff or used in any way that identifies you or your student. Only aggregate, summary-level results will be reported to the Fairfax County School Board.

If you did not receive a link to the survey or have technical difficulties completing the survey, please contact the FCPS Office of Research and Program Evaluation

Juneteenth

Juneteenth Holiday Today

Today we recognize Juneteenth, a celebration and commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, Juneteenth marks a day in 1865 when enslaved Texans learned they would be free, two months after the end of the Civil War and two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
