Senegal: New Law Introduces Amendments on Revoking Electoral Rights

On May 15, 2026, Senegal enacted and published a law in its official gazette clarifying when individuals may be barred from registering to vote. The law amends provisions of the Senegalese Electoral Code, particularly article L.29, which concerns eligibility to register on the voter rolls. Passed by a three-fifths majority in the National Assembly, the law redefines the circumstances under which electoral rights may be revoked and specifies the duration of such revocations.New Provisions of the LawThe new article L.29 excludes convicted felons from the voter rolls. It also excludes those sentenced to more than one month’s imprisonment for certain offenses.
