Lyssavirus investigation: Medical experts don't know why a vaccine that works in "almost all cases" failed to save the life of a Ballina man bitten by a bat. In July, Craig Nolte became the first person in NSW to die from bat lyssavirus. NSW Health convened an expert panel of health specialists to assess the case. They found Mr Nolte's post-exposure treatment was in line with Australian recommendations. NSW Health says this is the first case of bat lyssavirus in Australia
where infection has occurred despite post-exposure treatment. The panel notes there have been a few similar cases worldwide where the reason for infection could not be determined.

Feedback on 15 possible flood mitigation measures have been canvassed at forums in Casino, Lismore, Ballina, Woodburn and Kyogle. Senior principal research scientist Jai Vaze says everyone wants protection from floods but the vast majority do not want it to come at the cost of another community.
