Rivian is delaying its goal of reaching profitability by 2027 as it ramps up spending on autonomous driving technology. The automotive company reported $1.7 billion in research and development expenses last year, primarily for autonomy and AI, and plans to spend up to $2.05 billion this year. Rivian is prioritizing AI and self-driving development, including a new partnership with Uber.

The US government is working to update regulations for autonomous vehicles without steering wheels or pedals, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fast-tracking a petition from Zoox to deploy 2,500 such robotaxis. The agency also plans to remove outdated motor vehicle standards and issue updated safety guidance for AV developers.
