| The latest news is that the Commission of Fine Arts — composed entirely of Trump appointees — voted Thursday to approve a commemorative U.S. gold coin featuring Trump on one side and an eagle on the other. The 24-karat gold coin would show Trump glaring and leaning with two clenched fists on a desk — similar to his photograph on display in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The Washington Post’s art critic said the coin design sends a clear and “chilling” message. New coin designs are supposed to also get approval from another group, the bipartisan Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. But it has refused to consider it, pointing out that it would break with democratic norms. “It’s wrong. It goes against American culture and the traditions that drive what we put on our coinage,” Michael Moran, a Republican recommended for the committee by then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), told Dan. That same group has also pushed back on a Treasury proposal to create a $1 coin featuring Trump, warning that any coin featuring a living president’s face would be illegal. Dan said that gives the commemorative coin a “clearer path, given the Treasury Department’s authority to produce such coins without seeking congressional authorization.” He added: “Trump officials this week sounded bullish on producing one featuring the president. But as with Trump’s other pet projects — such as his planned White House ballroom and his desired 250-foot arch — any act to produce a Trump-branded U.S. coin will almost certainly invite lawsuits.” | | | | What else to know Thanks to Dan for guiding us through a murky issue.
