Dear Travel Fan,

In the fall, we began publishing a series of guides to some of the world’s biggest destinations, aiming to provide all the information you need for your first trip — and also to go deep enough to help with a return visit. This week we added the vibrant city of Madrid to our list. It has some of the world’s greatest museums, including the Prado, as well as a thriving food scene and, of course, flamenco. (And just in time for cherry blossom season, we’ve got an update on our Tokyo guide, too.)

Our 36 Hours column visits another major world city: Shanghai. It’s a city that is always changing, and there’s a lot new there to explore. In Shanghai and some other destinations, the apps that you’ve become familiar with for things like mapping or hiring a ride share don’t work. We’ve got a really helpful list of apps that you may need to add to your phone, depending on where you are traveling.

Elsewhere around the world, we visit Tunis, which is emerging as a hub of creativity in northern Africa, and stop in at an island in Belize that’s perfect for budget travelers. And we asked the rock climber Alex Honnold to share his five favorite places in Nevada with us.

Cuba’s travel industry has been hard hit, as the Trump administration has put pressure on the island. We have an explainer about what it’s like to travel to the island now.

The news about flying lately has been dominated by the government shutdown that has T.S.A. officers not being paid for their work, leading to long lines and the threat that some smaller airports might have to close. We also looked at how some Southwest Airlines fans are upset about the company’s change to how it accommodates plus-size passengers.

Finally, if you are flying and have a layover in the right city, you can turn a few hours into a microvacation to top off your vacation. We’ve got suggestions.

Wishing you safe and happy travels,
Amy Virshup
