Congratulations!

The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced  that Oakton head coach Jeff Lewis is Virginia’s recipient of the USMC “Battles Won” Head Coach of the Year. They also announced that Oakton’s Girls Wrestling coaching staff was honored as Virginia’s “State Assistant Coaching Staff of the Year."

Congratulations to Abigail Mesfin on an outstanding performance at the Penn Relays, where she placed 5th overall in the 3000m and earned a medal on one of the biggest high school track and field stages in the country.  Only 25 athletes were accepted into the girls 3000m field, with Caroline Sapperstein selected 12th and Abigail selected 15th. To have two Oakton High School girls accepted into the same elite race is a tremendous achievement.

Coach Marlo told us that during the race, Abigail remained composed and sat around 10th place for most of the competition. With about 500 meters remaining, she made a powerful move, passing five runners and closing the race with confidence to secure 5th overall. Caroline also had a strong performance, finishing 11th overall in the same event.

ALSO her 3200m conversion puts her as the 6th fastest girl Virginia has ever had. Caroline’s time puts her at 18th all-time. (And they’re both 1&2 for Oakton all-time)

Abigail’s race was remarkable from start to finish, and as a junior with one more year left to compete, she continues to show that she has the potential to become one of the greatest female distance runners in Oakton High School history.
