Due to families aging out of the school, we have a large number of openings for the PTA board and committee chairs for the 2026-2027 school year. Please consider lending your time and talents to make Thoreau the dynamic and supportive environment we all love. We are seeking to fill the following positions:
- Vice President – Serve on the board and coordinate newsletter and communications
- Secretary – Serve on the board drafting agendas and collecting minutes.
- School Supply Kits (1-3 people (ASAP!) ) – These volunteers coordinate with the company that supplies the kits and organizes the pick up at the beginning of the school year.
- Crosstown Hoops – Help bring this annual event to life, coordinating with administration on the event logistics
- Dining for Dollars – Work with local restaurants to participate in fundraising nights
- 7th Grade Dinner (1-3 people) – Plan and coordinate event
- 8th Grade End-of-Year Event (1-3 people) – Plan and coordinate event
- Staff Grants – Promote availability of grant money to teachers, collect and review grant requests with PTA board
- Fundraising – Develop fundraising ideas and coordinate programs

Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week May 4-8! We'll celebrate all of our amazing teachers, staff, admin, and bus drivers with a full week of appreciation planned for them.
- Tuesday May 5th: Smoothie cart from the PTA.
- Wednesday May 6th: Teacher's lounge clean up.
- Thursday May 7th: Gift Card Day! Gift cards will be picked at random.
- Friday May 8th: Lunch for the teachers!
Use the sign-up link to volunteer to help out at the in school events. These are fun opportunities to see the school during the day and to chat with the teachers. Please sign up for a shift!
Take part in the last Dining for Dollars of this school year on Friday, May 8. All day, pick up a refreshing drink, mention Thoreau Middle School, and have money donated to the school!

The Vienna Jammers percussion ensemble bring their signature sound to Capital One Hall for one unforgettable night, featuring everything from marimbas to trash cans, joined by special guest artist Snubby J. Show up and cheer on your fellow students!

Join the PTA
Please consider joining our Thoreau PTA. Memberships are $15 for one adult and $25 for a family membership for two adults. Anyone can be a member - teachers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. Memberships are tax-deductible.

Volunteer to help with Events
Are you interested in volunteering with the Thoreau PTA? There are plenty of opportunities to help with staff appreciation events, social events such as Crosstown Hoops, our grade level events, and so much more. Contact acstrawn@gmail.com with interest!

Donate to Support Your Students!
We would appreciate a one-time donation of $50 per family, but are thrilled to receive any and all contributions. Donations are tax-deductible, and 100% of your contribution goes directly back to supporting our Thoreau Middle School students and staff. Your donations will help the PTA support our community throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Among other things, our Thoreau PTA:
- Organizes appreciation events for our teachers and staff regularly, such as pies at Thanksgiving and cookies before Winter Break
- Coordinates special events such as the 7th Grade Fall Social and 8th Grade End of Year Party
- Grants financial support to teachers and staff for classroom or program needs
