Dear Theater Fans,

Welcome to a special edition of the Theater Update newsletter! The Tony Award nominations were just announced this morning, and The New York Times’s theater team has been abuzz. We’ve also been busy putting the news in perspective for you.

Michael Paulson has the main takeaways:

“Schmigadoon!” and “The Lost Boys,” two new Broadway shows that couldn’t be more different (musical theater spoofery v. ’80s vampires), picked up 12 nominations apiece — more than any other show. The other shows in the best new musical category are “Titaníque” and “Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).”

● On the musical revivals front, “Ragtime” picked up 11 nominations and “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” got nine. They’ll compete against “The Rocky Horror Show” for best new musical revival.

● The plays “Giant” (four nods) and “Death of a Salesman” (nine) mostly fared well, and so did film and TV stars, with nominations for John Lithgow (“Giant”), Daniel Radcliffe (“Every Brilliant Thing”), Lesley Manville and Mark Strong (“Oedipus”), and Rose Byrne and Kelli O’Hara (“Fallen Angels”).

How did your favorite show(s) make out?

Of course our team members had their own thoughts about the nominations. Taking stock of the snubs and surprises are Helen Shaw, Jesse Green, Alexis Soloski, Scott Heller, Laura Collins-Hughes and Elisabeth Vincentelli. And Rachel Sherman compiled the complete list of nominations, which has links to our reviews of the nominated shows.

Stay tuned … I’ll have more for you tomorrow, with the regularly scheduled Theater Update.
