Amazon founder Jeff Bezos thinks the U.S. tax code should be even more progressive than it is. Also, despite owning the Washington Post for years, he seems to have done nothing to pull its news coverage toward the political center. But enough with the gripes. Mr. Bezos gets America and the virtues of an open economy. And just in time, he’s speaking up as a forceful champion for allowing all Americans to benefit from technologies that were invented here but now face unwarranted political backlash. Mr. Bezos is also doing a public service in contrasting the performance of government with the performance of the companies he creates. Praise is also in order for Andrew
Ross Sorkin of CNBC, who conducted a fascinating interview with Mr. Bezos at his Blue Origin Rocket Factory in Florida. Here’s an excerpt from the CNBC transcript, in which Mr. Bezos discussed the New York City school system: BEZOS: They spend $44,000 per student, $44,000. That’s 30 percent more per student than other big cities like Chicago, L.A., and Boston. And it’s three times more than Miami and Houston. And by the way, New York City doesn’t get better outcomes. So what this, listen, let me, let me just
say, if we ran Amazon the way New York City runs their school system— SORKIN: Right. BEZOS: Your packages would take six weeks to arrive. We’d have to charge you $100 delivery fee. And then when the package did finally arrive, it’d have the wrong item in it anyway.
