Good afternoon. It’s Monday, June 15.

In today's newsletter:

  • The head of the Alaska Division of Elections said the state will not allow Dan J. Sullivan, the namesake challenger to Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, to appear on the primary ballot.

  • Despite steadily rising call volumes, the number of firefighters employed by Anchorage has not changed, and firefighters say they're straining to avoid burnout and excessive wear and tear on their bodies.

  • After years of childcare staffing losses, proposed regulation changes in Anchorage and new funding from the state are aimed at stabilizing an industry that's crucial for families.

In his latest column, Alaska historian David Reamer heads back to 1965 to review the first serious attempt to catalog the state's many slang terms and idioms. Robert O. Bowen's “An Alaskan Dictionary” includes words specific to that time, as well as plenty of terms from "bunny boots" to "Outside" that are still familiar to residents today.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly sunny today with a high around 64 degrees. Looking ahead to the rest of this week, we should see a mix of partly to mostly cloudy skies, and daytime highs ranging from the high 60s to mid-70s.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
