Good afternoon. It’s Tuesday, June 16.

In today's newsletter:

  • Someone is tampering with commercial gas meters in Anchorage, including this week, when officials say flames shot from a leak outside a bar near downtown as crews worked for hours to cut the meter’s gas supply off.

  • A brown bear at the Alaska Zoo attacked a smaller bear in a shared enclosure over the weekend in the kind of violent wildlife encounter that’s normally reserved for the wilderness.

  • The developer of the Alaska LNG megaproject said it struck a preliminary deal with the state’s largest power company that could lead to sales of natural gas, if the project is built.

At some point, you’ve probably been bamboozled by a good (or terrible) dad joke — those silly one-liners known for their cringeworthy humor. But there may be more to them than you think. Research suggests that humor may play a meaningful role in parenting, and shared laughter may help strengthen father-child bonds.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly sunny today with a high around 70 degrees, and we can expect more sunny skies on Wednesday. The forecast calls for increasing clouds on Thursday and daytime highs hovering in the high 60s and low 70s for the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
