You know that feeling when a dating profile looks amazing, but the person who shows up is… not quite the same? Job hunting has its own version. More candidates are calling out "career catfishing," where the job posting paints one picture, but the role you actually step into looks completely different. Maybe the position was advertised as “strategic,” but turns out to be mostly administrative. Maybe you agreed to hybrid and ended up in-office five days a week. Or maybe the exciting growth opportunities promised by HR never materialize.

Sometimes the switch-up is intentional, but other times it's the result of a company moving quickly or changing priorities during the hiring process. Either way, it's frustrating to realize the role you accepted isn't the one you thought you were signing up for.

The good news? You can usually spot a few red flags for this type of thing before accepting an offer. During interviews, ask what a typical day or week actually looks like, what success in the first 90 days means, and how much of your time will be spent on the responsibilities listed in the job description. It's also worth asking if the role has changed at all since it was first posted and what prompted those changes. If different interviewers describe the job in completely different ways, that's a sign to dig a little deeper.

We’re so excited for Eyes of Kings! Without giving away spoilers, how would you describe this chapter of the story in three words?

Intense, searing conclusion!

This series explores power, ambition, and loyalty in fascinating ways. What drew you to those themes, and why do you think they resonate so deeply right now?

I was initially intrigued by these themes as a way to unpack the fantasy genre. Fantasy often revolves around royalty, whether to tell stories of revolution and reclaiming a lost throne, or to portray tyrants and the fight for good defeating evil. I was curious about this trope we often see in fantasy, where one bad ruler is overthrown as a way to save the day… contrasted against a concept called the Mandate of Heaven, which influenced thousands of years of Chinese dynasties and argued that an entire system must be overhauled to bring a new age. Can there truly be change without widespread sacrifice?
