The Oakwood High School football team paid a visit to Veterans at the Community Living Center (CLC). On Friday, 20 players and two coaches spent a couple of hours talking with Veterans about sports, the Veterans’ military service and other topics. The players split up into four groups and visited the different CLC neighborhoods. Some Veterans even gave the teammates some sound advice about life in general. The athletes said they enjoyed talking to the Veterans about their service and they learned a lot. This was the second year the team visited the Veterans.
Dozens showed up Tuesday to the Dayton National Cemetery to honor two unaccompanied Veterans for their joint committal service. A Marine dangles by his fingers under a bridge. He’s under enemy fire, rigging 500 pounds of explosives to destroy a bridge to thwart an armored invasion. It’s not a trailer for an upcoming Tom Cruise movie; it’s what Marine Col. John Ripley did in Vietnam 54 years ago. And it’s the reason for Ripley’s Medal of Honor.
