Secretary of State Marco Rubio met today with Vice President Pedro Alliana of Paraguay, underscoring the United States’ commitment to a strong and enduring partnership with Paraguay.

The two leaders discussed deepening security cooperation to counter transnational criminal and terrorist threats.  Secretary Rubio thanked Vice President Alliana for Paraguay’s continued leadership on addressing shared regional challenges, including Venezuela, and welcomed Vice President Alliana’s partnership on these priorities.

Following the meeting, Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez signed a Memorandum of Understanding Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of Paraguay Concerning Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation, reaffirming the two countries’ shared commitment to advancing civil nuclear energy projects with the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation and demonstrating the historic expansion in U.S.-Paraguayan ties.
