Rep. John James has won Michigan’s Republican nomination for governor, NBC News projects, despite being vastly outspent by his opponent, wealthy businessman Perry Johnson.

James, who was boosted by an endorsement from President Donald Trump, will face Democratic nominee Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s secretary of state, this fall in one of the nation’s most fiercely contested battleground states.
