What if premarital sex was only legal for one night a year? That is the premise of new romcom One Night Only starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner and Maya Hawke. Instead of mobs with pitchforks lusting for blood like in the Purge movies, thousands of New York City singles flood the streets, hoping to get lucky during a 12-hour window. Critic Radheyan Simonpillai writes that the film’s world-building is “amusing,” but the “high-concept premise takes away from the romcom of it all and gives back nothing in return.”

Also this week, critic Barry Hertz writes that Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s new Japanese historical drama The Samurai and the Prisoner is the “most immediately, abundantly satisfying film in the 71-year-old director’s magnificently long career.”
