Iconographic convention surrounding evangelist portraits in illuminated manuscripts and illustrated printed books make the four writers of the canonical Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—some of the most recognizable figures in book history. The Rare Book and Special Collections Division has several examples of these portraits, which, when compared, reveal a diversity of endearing details used by artists to engage their viewers and bring these well-known subjects to life.
