I came across one of the most revealing windows into how AI will impact our work recently, in a study published by Harvard Business School.
It’s called The Cybernetic Teammate, and it documents a rigorous study of 776 professionals at Procter & Gamble.
They pitted professionals working with AI against teams of humans working on their own without it, and their findings are both insightful and counterintuitive.
Overall, they found that a single person working with AI on real product innovation challenges could match the performance of a two-person team, which means it effectively doubled their productivity.
Not only that, the AI-enabled professionals worked significantly faster, produced higher quality and more balanced solutions, and better integrated new perspectives outside their functional area.
AI assistance essentially erased the performance gap between specialists and generalists, and between those who were more experienced and novices, thus leveling the playing field.
Most surprisingly of all, those using AI reported significantly higher levels of positive emotions (excitement, energy, and enthusiasm) compared to those working without AI, while also reporting lower levels of negative emotions like anxiety and frustration.
(And by the way, the participants in this study were using the GPT-4o model, released in May 2024, which is now 11 generations ago, and thus qualifies as ancient technology by AI standards).
I find this just incredible: not only did AI-assisted professionals perform better along every dimension studied – which would be hugely significant on its own – but they had more fun while doing it!
This wouldn’t be very promising if these kinds of AI-assisted jobs were rare or dwindling. But AI job postings are up 448% according to the most credible source available, Mary Meeker’s annual report. During the same time period, non-AI jobs in tech declined by 9%.
The AI economy is exploding, and those who find themselves a place in it have more leverage and earning power than ever. I don’t see any evidence for the doom-and-gloom predictions that AI will decimate the job market.
I do think that certain things have to be true for this optimistic case to come true:
- You need to know and understand how to use the latest AI tools to your advantage
- You need to use AI as an extension and amplifier of your abilities, not as a replacement
- You need to customize and adapt a system according to your own needs, not think you can install someone else’s wholesale
- You need a centralized place for your context, that you own and control and can take with you, so what you’re building is safe regardless of what Anthropic or OpenAI do tomorrow
