After nearly two years of renovation, VA Long Beach's PIER Center (Partnership in Effective Recovery) has reopened its doors — and it's better than ever.
No appointment needed. Just walk in for a warm shower, a hot meal, a phone to call home, social activities, or someone who understands. For many Veterans, this is the first door into VA care — and often the door that leads to housing, treatment, and everything else VA offers.
New upgrades include a patio for connecting outdoors, a phone-charging station, updated restrooms, a bottle-filling fountain, and two new group rooms for programming and community.
This space was built by Veterans, for Veterans. Whatever brings you here — recovery, community, or just a place to be — you belong here.
Watch a walk-through to see the space!
VA Long Beach is now offering Music Therapy Groups for Veterans at VA Long Beach, facilitated by a Board Certified Music Therapist! Music Therapy can be helpful for many areas of health and well-being, including mental health, emotional expression and communication skills, motor skills and coordination, cognitive rehabilitation, physical activity, social connection, and more!
1) Basic Songwriting for Creative Expression Group (in-person, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.)
This group provides Veterans with a safe and healing environment to set their stories to song. The Music Therapist will offer simple structures for lyric and melody composition and assist Veterans with the songwriting process. Veterans are welcome to come and create their own songs or just listen to songs created by their Veteran peers.
2) Music for Wellness Group (in-person, Monday, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
This group offers Veterans a live music-making experience to promote healthy self-expression and tools for coping and tension reduction. Many forms of music will be used, including percussion instrument play, singing, guided music listening and imagery, guided musical movement, as well as group reflection and discussion.
Sign up today by requesting a Music Therapy consult from your healthcare team. Both groups are open to Veterans of ALL musical abilities; no prior experience is needed!
