A reminder this acorn collection season: Leave some for nature!
Please do not harvest acorns, walnuts, or other nuts from our forested trails and off-trail areas. These seeds are needed to feed wildlife and support natural forest regeneration. (It's also against the rules.)
To protect our natural resources, seeds should only be collected from landscaped areas, streets, sidewalks, and yards.
Leaving at least a third of any seeds you find helps support the local ecosystem, so gather mindfully wherever you collect. Our deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and other furry friends will thank you!

Help Clean Accotink Creek, Earn Stormwater Credits
Join the Friends of Accotink Creek for the International Coastal Cleanup in Fairfax City!
Volunteers will help remove litter from local waterways and surrounding areas on Saturday, Sept. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 3.
City residents who participate in this event may earn stormwater utility credits.
Sept. 26 Cleanup Locations:
- 9-11 a.m. Accotink Creek at Fairfax Blvd.
- Noon-2 p.m. Accotink Creek at University Drive
- 3-5 p.m. Accotink Creek at Blenheim Blvd.

Presentations and Proclamations
- Mayor Catherine Read presented proclamations acknowledging Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week, Sept. 22 as Car Free Day, and Sept. 14-18 as Disability Voting Rights Week in the City of Fairfax.
Consent Agenda
- The council adopted a resolution to cancel the installation of a traffic signal at University Drive and Layton Hall. The signal was included in the original concept plan for the University Drive Bike Lanees project, but the project team determined that a signal was not warranted under current conditions nor would it be under future modeled conditions. As a result, the city is requesting that VDOT cancel the Revenue Sharing-funded traffic signal project associated with the bike lanes project.
- The council adopted a resolution to reappropriate to FY 2027 the unspent FY 2026 general/operating, capital, and enterprise funds. This recommended reappropriation resolution is an administrative action presented to the council at this time each year to account for any year-end adjustments and final audit work.
- The council adopted a resolution authorizing the city manager to sign the FY 2027 agreement between the city and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) for CUE operating and capital assistance. DRPT contracts directly with the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission for WMATA capital and operating subsidy assistance. DRPT requires the city to execute grant agreements in order to receive the state assistance funds.
- The council appointed the following individuals to city boards, commissions, and advisory committees:

- Commission for Women: Trish Bailey and Anisha Singh
- Environmental Sustainability Committee: Thomas Williamson
- Fairfax Area Disability Services Board: Diane Monnig

Public Hearings
- Approved Naila Ayoub’s request for a special-use permit to establish a family daycare for up to 12 children at 10230 Antietam Avenue.
Public Hearing Not Required
- The council adopted the City Council Code of Ethics. It generally addresses issues of stewardship, public conduct and behavior, transparency, maintaining and ensuring public confidence, avoiding conflicts of interest, ensuring proper use of public resources, maintaining integrity, and confidentiality where appropriate, and loyalty to the locality and its mission. The Code of Ethics also applies to boards, commissions, and committees appointed by the city council.
- The council awarded a contract in the amount of $725,551 to Arthur Construction Co., Inc. for construction of the University Drive Bike Lanes project, contingent upon approval by the Virginia Department of Transportation. This project includes installation of bicycle facilities along University Drive and pedestrian improvements at the intersection of University Drive and Layton Hall Drive.
The existing pavement will be resurfaced and restriped to add on-road bike lanes between Layton Hall Drive and North Street and sharrows between North Street and South Street. At the University Drive/Layton Hall Drive intersection, improvements include removal of the right turn slip lane and installation of new, ADA-compliant curb ramps and curb modifications with a pedestrian crossing on the south leg of University Drive.
