Closures on Teddy Roosevelt Bridge Start Monday

Teddy Roosevelt Bridge

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) advises motorists and pedestrians that beginning September 21, 2026, Ramps to Route 50 westbound and to George Washington Memorial Parkway northbound, as well as the pedestrian trail crossing the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, will close as the project enters its next phase of construction. Mainline I-66 will remain open to traffic.

The closures will allow crews to begin demolition and reconstruction of the I-66 westbound off-ramps. This phase also includes construction of a wider sidewalk, upgraded lighting, and fencing, followed by continued demolition and reconstruction work along the I-66 mainline.

  • Route 50 Westbound Exit Closure: Motorists traveling westbound on I-66 toward Arlington/Rosslyn via Route 50 should continue west on I-66, use Exit 73, and follow the posted Arlington/Rosslyn detour. The ramp is anticipated to reopen in March 2027.
  • Northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway Exit Closure: Motorists traveling westbound on I-66 toward the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway should continue west on I-66, use Exit 73, and follow posted detour signs to northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway. The ramp is anticipated to reopen in May 2027.
  • The Pedestrian Trail: Bike/Pedestrian trail crossing the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge will also close beginning September 21, 2026, and is anticipated to reopen in September 2027.

Signed detours utilizing Key Bridge and Arlington Memorial Bridge will be in place during the closures. Motorists should expect changing work-zone configurations as construction advances and are encouraged to use caution, follow posted signage, and allow additional travel time through the area.
