It takes a lot for a candidate for the Texas Railroad Commission to become a national story. But Bo French is not just another Republican running for an obscure regulatory agency, and the post he sent following a Texas Longhorns football game last Saturday went beyond your run-of-the-mill racism. It held a mirror up to what the Republican Party really is in Trump’s second term.

To French, a photo of a celebrating group of South Asian students—in cowboy hats and burnt orange—offered a disturbing glimpse of demographic decline. “I heard UT graduation this year looked like this,” he wrote. “I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.”

Some Texas conservatives condemned the comment. Others, like Ken Paxton, simply changed the subject. But French Republicans cannot claim ignorance of their nominee. As I explained in a story about French for Mother Jones, he has called publicly for 100 million people to be removed from the country—including every single Muslim. Forced “remigration” of “third world savages” is one of his core proposals. It doesn’t even matter if you’re a citizen; if your family came from the wrong part of the world, you basically need to go. “We need to be Rhodesia,” he has said—drawing inspiration from the now-defunct white supremacist state in Africa.

If I’m aware of what the Republican nominee for Texas Railroad Commission thinks, the Texas Republicans who endorsed him certainly are. And there’s a reason that so many of them stood by him before now—and why many of them still are. Read the full piece here.
