A Note from the Principal
Dear Daniels Run Families,
What a wonderful evening we had at Daniels Run last night! Thank you to everyone who joined us for Back to School Night. It was great to see so many families in our classrooms, connecting with teachers, learning more about what students are doing each day, and experiencing some of the excitement that fills our school.
A very special thank you to our incredible PTA for organizing the Family Picnic and bringing our community together for such a fun evening. From the food trucks and vendors to the opportunity to simply spend time together, it was wonderful to see students playing, families visiting, and staff connecting with our community outside of the school day. Events like this take a tremendous amount of planning behind the scenes, and we are so grateful to our PTA and volunteers for making it possible.
Three Day Weekend
A reminder that there will be no school for students on Monday, September 21, in observance of Yom Kippur. To all of our Daniels Run families who observe Yom Kippur, we wish you a meaningful and peaceful holiday. We hope everyone enjoys the three day weekend, and we look forward to welcoming our Dragons back on Tuesday.
Fairfax High School Homecoming
Homecoming week is coming to Fairfax High School, and we love being part of the excitement! The Fairfax High School Homecoming Parade will take place next Friday, September 25. Blenheim Boulevard heading toward Fairfax High School, just past Daniels Run, will close beginning at approximately 4:00 p.m. for the parade.
Many of our Daniels Run students and families enjoy attending the parade and cheering on the Lions. If you will be traveling in the area Friday afternoon, please plan accordingly for the road closure and additional traffic.
Family Lunch Visits Begin September 22
Beginning Tuesday, September 22, parents and caregivers are welcome to join their child for lunch. Thank you for giving us these first few weeks of school to establish routines and help students become comfortable and independent with their school day. We know many families enjoy this opportunity, and we look forward to welcoming you!
As a reminder, because of food allergies and dietary needs, please do not share food with other students when visiting for lunch.
Fall Field Day: October 9
October will bring one of our favorite Daniels Run traditions, Fall Field Day! Please mark your calendar for Friday, October 9.
Blenheim Boulevard Construction Update
Roadwork continues along Blenheim Boulevard as part of the City of Fairfax construction project. Work is generally taking place between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., which should minimize the impact on our normal arrival and dismissal routines. If you are visiting Daniels Run during the school day, please continue to allow a little extra time for your commute.
Thank you for another great week and for the many ways you support our students, staff, and school. Last night was a wonderful reminder that Daniels Run is more than a school. It is a community, and we are grateful to have such an engaged and supportive group of families as part of our Dragon family.
Have a wonderful long weekend!
Warm regards,
Susan Mullen, Principal

Street, Bike, and Scooter Safety Reminders
As our students commute to and from school each day, keeping them safe is our top priority. We ask parents and guardians to help reinforce essential traffic and pedestrian safety habits with their students:
- Crosswalk Safety: Always use designated crosswalks to cross the street. Look left, right, and left again before stepping into the road, and wait until traffic comes to a complete stop before crossing.
- Helmet Habits: Helmets are mandatory for students riding bikes, scooters, or skateboards. Make sure your child’s helmet fits properly—snug on the head and strapped securely under the chin.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our school community safe!

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K to 12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:
-
Fall identification: Students in grades 3 to 7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15.
-
Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2 to 7 may be referred by December 15.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services:
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3 to 6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3 to 6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Ms.Gaby Auza, school testing coordinator, at GMAuza1@fcps.edu by September 30.
Families are invited to attend two AAP information meetings led by Ms. Danni James, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):
For more information, please contact Ms. Danni James, AART, at DFJamesfcps.edu or visit the FCPS Advanced Academic Programs webpage.
