Dear Waynewood Owls,
What a wonderful, spirit-filled week we have had at Waynewood Elementary! Walking through our halls, I am constantly reminded of how special our school community truly is. From bright smiles to big hearts, our Owls have been shining in so many ways.
Earlier this week, our school turned into a sea of gold as students and staff came together to show our support for children battling childhood cancer. Seeing our young learners express such empathy and solidarity was deeply moving. It was a powerful reminder that even our smallest Owls can make a big impact in bringing hope and awareness to important causes.
We also had Picture Day this week! It was delightful seeing everyone dressed in their finest, ready to capture a snapshot of this school year. If your child happened to be absent or missed having their photo taken, please do not worry. Our picture make-up day is scheduled for November 5, so there will be another opportunity to get those smiles on camera.
Looking ahead, the excitement is building for our upcoming Jog-A-Thon fundraiser next week! Our students have been working hard to reach their class goals, and the enthusiasm is contagious. In fact, a few lucky classrooms received a special visit from the mysterious Waynewood Fairies this week to celebrate hitting their fundraising targets! We can’t wait to cheer on all of our runners next week as they hit the track, stay active, and support our school.
I also want to send a heartfelt thank you to our incredible PTA. Your delivery of sweet cookies and refreshing lemonade for our staff this week was such a thoughtful treat. Our teachers and team members felt so appreciated and energized by your kindness. Thank you for always taking such wonderful care of our school staff.
Please keep in mind that there will be no school this coming Monday, as we observe the Yom Kippur holiday. We hope this day off provides your family with a peaceful and restorative start to the week.
We look forward to welcoming our Owls back on Tuesday, ready to soar into another great week!

Please help us meet our Fundraising goals! Jog-A-Thon is our biggest fundraiser of the year and helps to fund teh incredible work of our PTA. In the past, the PTA has used these funds to pay for field trips, soccer goals, shade structures for the playground and courtyard, fund teacher stipends and purchase many, many library books!
There are individual and class prizes that students can win! This year one of the hot prizes is a special Waynewood Dumpling that is in high demand!

There is an opportunity for your student to connect with peers who also have a parent or caregiver serving in the military. At Military Club, students will have the chance to learn, share, connect, and grow alongside other military children. An atmosphere is created where the students can share about the similarities and differences of their military child journeys, but also learn and have fun. Do you have any questions? My name is Surayyah Colbert, and I’m the Family Liaison at Waynewood Elementary School. You may be asking, what in the world is a family liaison? Well, please allow me to tell you a little bit about the position, as well as a little bit about me. A family liaison is meant to be the connection between the school and the family/caregiver of the students. Think family engagement, resources, various types of support. Also, if you have an interest in being a volunteer at Waynewood, or if you are military connected and would like to know if anything in particular is offered for military students, or if you are even looking for some tips on helping your student stay organized, then I can help. If you have a question and don’t know exactly who to ask, feel free to let me be your first point of contact, and I’ll point you in the right direction. As for me, I’m a person who cares immensely about families, education, and getting people what they need to thrive and succeed. Please don’t hesitate to contact me—I’m here for you.
The book fair is coming October 5th-9th! Students can shop with cash or an online eWallet.
The Book Fair Late Night will be on Tuesday, October 6. Stop by after school, we are open until 7:00pm!

From September 15 to October 15, FCPS recognizes and celebrates the histories and cultures of the members of our community who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
