We have some truly wonderful news to kick off this week’s newsletter!
We are thrilled to share that we were honored with a visit from our superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid, this week! During her time at Oak View, she read with 3rd grade during a library lesson, enjoyed a 1st grade phonics lesson, proudly observed as kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grade partnered up for a buddy class activity, and more. Throughout her visit, Dr. Reid expressed tremendous gratitude for all that our teachers are doing and was deeply impressed by how engaged our students were in their learning! Be sure to keep an eye out for Dr. Reid’s Weekly Reflections when they are published this Sunday—Oak View will be highlighted, and we can’t wait to see the feature!
This week we also gathered for our very first Schoolwide Morning Meeting of the year, bringing our entire student body together as one strong community. This year, we are especially excited to introduce Buddy Classrooms. By pairing our upper-grade students with lower-grade classrooms, our older students have the opportunity to step up as positive role models while our younger students gain trusted peers to look up to. It was very exciting to see in action this week!

Introducing Oak View’s Good News Call of the Day!
This school year, Oak View launched an exciting new initiative to highlight the incredible choices and dedication within our school community, the Good News Call of the Day!
It has been an absolute joy spreading positivity across our community, one phone call at a time.
Too often, a call from the school office creates a moment of worry for parents. We are flipping that narrative on its head! Through this program, we proactively celebrate the wonderful moments happening in our classrooms and hallways, ensuring our families hear about the great things occurring in real time.
How It Works

The Nomination: Teachers and staff nominate students who soar on WINGS and colleagues who do incredible work for our school community.

The Surprise: Ms. Luerssen or Ms. Adams gathers with the nominee to call a loved one out of the blue with the exciting news.

The Celebration: After sharing the proud moment on the phone, the nominee receives a special Good News bracelet and has their photo featured on the board outside the principal's office!
Dr. Reid Received a Good News Call During Her Visit!
The impact of these calls reached beyond our building this week. During Dr. Reid’s visit to Oak View this week Ms. Luerssen made a call to celebrate her impact and support of Oak View. Dr. Reid chose School Board Member Kyle McDaniel to hear the good news! It was an honor to celebrate Dr. Reid with him, share the fantastic work happening at Oak View, and demonstrate how a simple phone call can brighten someone’s day!
We look forward to making many more of these calls throughout the year and continuing to celebrate our students and staff as they soar!

Kiss and Ride Reminders
For safety and to prevent a backup, please follow these Kiss and Ride procedures as staff are not permitted to direct traffic on Sideburn Road:

Do not turn left from Sideburn Road into Kiss and Ride.

Do not make a U-turn on Sideburn Road.
- To access the Kiss and Ride line, use Portsmouth behind the school and turn right onto Sideburn Road.
- Students may only be dropped off in the designated Kiss and Ride area on school grounds.
- Remember, enter the school by turning right, and exit by turning right.
Thank you for all the right turns…it keeps us all safe!
High energy and school spirit was on display at our Schoolwide Morning Meeting.
Authors Katherine Applegate and Gennifer Choldenko to visit Grades 3-6
Newbery Award winner Katherine Applegate and her co-author, Gennifer Choldenko will be coming to Oak View on book tour to visit students in grades 3-6!
If you’d like to order a signed copy of their new book, I am a Good Dog, please order on MySchoolBucks (see instructions in Friday Folders).
As part of this FREE author visit, we are required to order all books through the school. Please do not purchase your book through another retailer. Ms. Applegate and Ms. Choldenko will be visiting multiple schools on September 30, and will sign the books off-site before coming to Oak View, so we can only guarantee books ordered through the school will be signed. Ordering is always optional.

Oak View Elementary Celebrates Blue Star Welcome Week
Oak View Elementary is celebrating Blue Star Welcome Week from September 26 to October 4 to ensure our military families feel welcomed and supported in our school community. Join us for the Blue Star Breakfast!

What: Light breakfast refreshments, helpful information, and a chance for us to honor your service.
Please RSVP by filling out the Blue Star Breakfast Form if you plan to attend. Can't make breakfast? Consider joining your child for lunch in the cafeteria anytime during the week!

PTA After School Club registration is still open!
With activities for many different interests - from robotics to acting to chess - there’s something for everyone. Clubs begin the week of September 28. Registration is open through September 22 through Homeroom.
Oak View Ecoclub
Do you a have a 3rd – 6th grader who loves nature and wants to help the planet? We’re forming this year’s Ecoclub and we’d love to have them join us! We’ll be getting our hands dirty and maintaining our school gardens, unleashing our creativity to make awesome posters and morning announcements that teach everyone how to be more eco-friendly, and dreaming up other cool projects to make a positive impact on our community. Ready to dig in and make a difference? Join the Ecoclub and let's make our school a cleaner, greener place! Our first meeting is Tuesday, October 13. We’ll meeting once a month on the second Tuesday of the month throughout the school year. There is no registration fee for the club.

Early Release Wednesdays
Early Release Wednesdays will begin on October 21. For student safety and efficient dismissals, we need every parent to complete the Oak View Early Release Wednesday Form for each of their children. If you have already filled out the county form, thank you! However, we still need the Oak View form completed, as it asks for additional details about transportation.
On the form, you will indicate whether your child will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. or will remain at school because they require child care until the regular dismissal at 3:15 p.m. Please complete one form for each child no later than Friday, September 25. We appreciate your cooperation in completing this request so we can design the most appropriate supervision plan for students who need to remain at school.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us keep our students safe and our processes efficient.

Twice Exceptional Students
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. Twice-Exceptional (2e) learners are students who are both gifted and have learning challenges or disabilities.
Families can learn more about 2e learners, how to support them, and how to partner with schools on the 2e webpage, which also includes a link to the Special Education Handbook.
