Dear Lorton Station Families,

We hope you are having a wonderful week! As we continue our school year, we want to thank you for your partnership in supporting your child’s learning and success.

DOT Day We were excited to celebrate DOT Day this Tuesday, and our Roadrunners participated in activities throughout the day that showcased how they could make their mark. DOT Day reminds us that every student can make a difference, discover their creativity, and embrace the idea that their learning journey can begin with one small step.

Reading Every Day We encourage families to make reading a daily priority. Please work with your child to read for at least 45 minutes each day. Reading together, listening to your child read, or allowing your child to enjoy a book independently are all great ways to build vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and a love of reading.

Make Math Part of Everyday Life Math learning does not have to stop when the school day ends! Look for opportunities to practice practical math as a family. Cooking is a great example—have your child read a recipe, measure ingredients, double or halve a recipe, compare quantities, or calculate cooking times. Everyday activities such as shopping, telling time, counting money, and measuring are also wonderful opportunities to strengthen math skills.

Attendance Matters Every school day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect. Attendance is key to academic growth. Please make every effort to ensure your child arrives at school on time and is ready to learn each day. Consistent attendance helps students maintain learning momentum and stay connected to classroom instruction.

No School Monday There will be no school on Monday in observance of Yom Kippur. We wish those in our community who observe a meaningful Yom Kippur.

Navigating the Digital Age: Creating Digital Balance as a Family

The  FCPS Family Resource Center will be hosting a free webinar about practical strategies for establishing healthy relationships with technology at home. Interpreters are available if requested at least a week before the webinar. Interpretation cannot be guaranteed. The webinar will have closed-captioning in any chosen language if they cannot find an interpreter.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)

Fairfax County Public Schools is proposing to expand Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) to all middle schools over the next few years. More information about the proposed plan can be found on Board Docs. If approved by the School Board this December, Hayfield Middle School will become the assigned school for students who are eligible for Full-Time AAP and live within the Hayfield Middle School boundary. The new assignment would be for students in grade 7 for the 2027-28 school year and for students in grades 7-8 for the 2028-29 school year. 

There will be a community meeting for interested families to learn more about the proposal to expand Full-Time AAP to all FCPS middle schools and provide feedback on September 24, 2026 at 6 p.m. at Hayfield Middle School. Please let us know if you plan to attend and if you require interpretation services by filling out the Hayfield MS RSVP form.

Review and Sign SR and R by September 30

The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.

Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Please sign the SR&R acknowledgment form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or by signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Strategic Plan

Our Focus on Academic Growth and ExcellenceThe FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

The third goal is for all students to achieve academic growth and excellence. We want our students to have the academic skills to be successful, including reading on level by third grade. See how Goal 3 is being put into practice.

Attendance

Not Feeling Well? When Your Child Can Come to School

School is better when your child is here! But we do understand that some days, they may feel unwell. Learn more about which symptoms are ok at school (like sneezing or sniffles), and when your child should stay home (if they have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, for example). 

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify the school so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school public health nurse. Call the school as soon as you know your child will be absent and, if possible, let them know how long you think they will be out.

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will be providing school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. 

Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. Additional immunization resources are also available.
