Dear Hybla Valley Families,
The first four weeks of school have been great! Our students have been learning classroom routines and procedures, making new friends, building relationships with their teachers, completing assessments, and participating in important safety drills. We are proud of how well they are settling into the school year!
We have noticed that some students have been bringing toys and other personal items to school and taking them to recess. Please talk with your child about leaving personal items at home. We have plenty of recess equipment, including balls, hula hoops, jump ropes, and chalk, as well as a playground for students to enjoy.
As we move further into the school year, we encourage families to help students maintain good habits by arriving at school on time and ready for the day. Every day of instruction matters, and being present allows students to fully participate in the learning and experiences happening in their classrooms.
We wish all of our families a restful, long three-day weekend. We look forward to welcoming students back to the building on Tuesday, September 22!

Three-hour early release will continue for the 2026-27 school year. The biggest difference is that the day of the week will change from Monday to Wednesday. A survey of steering committee participants showed that 83% voted in favor of moving the early release to Wednesdays. The main reason is due to the significant number of school holidays that fall on Mondays. Learn more about early release Wednesdays for Elementary Schools.
Reminders:
- K-6 Students can dismiss at 1:05 PM or 4:05 PM on early release Wednesdays. Parents and guardians will need to let the school know what time they'd like their students to go home.
- All PreK students dismiss at 4:05 PM on early release Wednesdays.

 What is 2e?
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) defines twice exceptional (2e) students as:
"children, kindergarten through twelfth grade, who are identified as gifted by the identification and placement committee for the school division’s gifted education program and are also identified as a child with a disability as defined by Virginia’s special education regulations. The gifted identification qualifies the student for educational service options that support performance at increasing levels of complexity that differ significantly from those of their age-level peers. Identification as a child with a disability entitles the student to an individualized education program (IEP) in accordance with state and federal guidelines or a 504 Plan. The IEP specifies the individual educational needs of the child and what special education and related services are necessary to meet the child’s educational needs (8VAC20-81-110)."
In Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), this means that a child is considered twice exceptional when they both:
- Are eligible for Subject-Specific, Part-Time, or Full-Time Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services.
- Have either an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan.
Fairfax County Public Schools is excited to share information about Twice-Exceptional (2e) Programming available throughout our school system. Twice-exceptional students demonstrate advanced abilities while also experiencing learning, attention, or other challenges that may require additional support.
The Superintendent’s Advisory Committee for 2e Programming developed a one-pager sharing ways in which we are Supporting 2e Learners in FCPS. This information is included on the 2e webpage. Families can also learn more about 2e learners, ways to support them, and how to partner with schools. The webpage also includes a link to the Special Education Handbook.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:

Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.

Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Erica LoMonaco, School Testing Coordinator, at erlomonaco@fcps.edu by September 30.

Starting October 27, Hybla Valley will host a Free Food Market on the fourth Tuesday of each month beginning at 4:15 p.m., while supplies last. Families are encouraged to bring a bag to carry their food. Entry will be through Door 2. We look forward to supporting our school community!
Please remind your students that all personal electronic devices, including cell phones and AirPods, must be turned off and stored in their backpacks throughout the entire school day. Students who do not comply with this expectation will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R).
Everything You Need to Do in SIS ParentVUE
Are you working your way through back-to-school forms and checklists? Make sure you have a SIS ParentVUE account for your family and log in to find important forms and updates.
- Be among the first to know about weather closings, bus delays, and other critical communications from your school and FCPS by providing your cell phone number and email in ParentVUE. To update your contact information in ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then click the “Online Verification/Update” icon.
- Submit daylong absences by clicking “Report Absence.”
If you do not have a ParentVUE account, contact Ms. Miller at jamiller@fcps.edu for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.
Remember to Complete Permission Forms for School Resources
Families can now easily grant consent for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account login. Parents can easily opt their child in or out of a variety of resources, including online educational tools, school counseling services, and more.

Lightspeed Parent Portal:
- Weekly Web Activity Reports: Detailed insights into their child’s online activity.
- Custom Block Lists: Ability to block specific websites during non-school hours.
- Internet Scheduling: Customizable, recurring routines to automate internet access (e.g., setting “Focus Time” for homework, a “Dinner” pause, or a weekday “Bedtime” routine).
How to Enroll:
- Use the Log In or Register link at the bottom of the Weekly Student Online Activity Report email.
- Click the “Login or Register” button to create an account.
- A verification email will be sent to the email address provided during the registration process to log in to the portal.
- Once in the portal, use the drop-down to toggle between students if there is more than one child.

FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide school-required immunizations and optional flu shots for all FCPS students with no out-of-pocket costs. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be available throughout the school year.
Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary. View immunization resources on the FCPS website.
Hybla Valley Elementary Community,
This fall, the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS), in partnership with Franconia District Supervisor Rodney Lusk, will host Neighborhood College—a free, six-session certificate program open to Franconia District residents. Sessions will include guest speakers, interactive activities, breakout discussions, networking opportunities, and information about advisory boards and other volunteer opportunities.
This program is a great way to build leadership skills and strengthen community connections.
