Marshall Parents, Caregivers, and Friends,
It’s hard to believe four weeks of school are already behind us. Before you know it, the first quarter will be over and fall will be in full swing. I continue to be inspired by the positive energy our students bring to the building every day.
On September 8th, we launched our new Flex time. Every other day during 4th period (on "Blue" days), students can schedule time tailored to their individual needs. Options include visiting a teacher for extra help, making up a missed test or assignment, spending time in the library, attending a club meeting, or working on independent study. Teachers and administrators may also assign students to a specific Flex session when needed.
Last week, I hosted "Chess and Checkers with the Principal" during Flex, which gave me a great opportunity to get to know students in a relaxed setting. You can partner with us at home by asking your student how they are using Flex time to support their academic success.
I hope everyone in our community has a wonderful long weekend ahead. For those observing Yom Kippur, I wish you a meaningful and peaceful holiday.

Review and Sign the SR&R by September 30
The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Cellphones and Personal Devices
Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device. Importance of Strong Attendance Habits
September is Attendance Awareness Month. Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:
- Setting a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
- Laying out clothes and packing backpacks the night before.
- Talking to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning, if they seem anxious about going to school.
- Developing back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Avoiding medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

The Importance of the Flu Vaccine
As we look ahead to the upcoming school year, the health and well-being of our students continues to be one of our priorities. Staying up to date with your child's flu vaccination helps:
- Reduce School Absences: Keeping students healthy means more time spent learning and engaging with peers.
- Protect the Community: Vaccination helps shield vulnerable family members and neighbors from seasonal illness.
- Support Overall Wellness: Routine flu shots are a key component of a proactive student health plan.
Upcoming Flu Shot Events
FCPS, in partnership with Inspire Health Alliance, will provide flu shots for all FCPS students, ages 18 and under, at no out-of-pocket cost. Multiple events will take place at designated FCPS locations. Additional dates will be made available throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may view upcoming events and schedule an appointment for their student. Participation is voluntary.
World Language Exam
The World Languages Credit by Exam assesses a student’s demonstrated proficiency in a language other than English. Students may earn up to three high school world language credits. The assessment will occur at Marshall High School on November 6, 2026. You will miss class time to take the assessment.

1) Check Course History in SIS to confirm you do not already have credits in the language
2) Download a registration form here and complete it. Hand the completed form to me so that I can register you in the system for the test, by October 15th!
3) I will register you in the portal and you will receive a confirmation e-mail
4) Review the Test Taker Guide
5) Check your e-mail in October for more information regarding testing location
Signs of Suicide
Our clinical team will be delivering our Signs of Suicide programming for 11th graders on 9/28, 9/29, and 10/1. We are hosting a parent/guardian viewing session on Friday 9/25 at 3:00pm in Student Services if anyone is interested in viewing what we deliver.

Football Game Safety and Security Update
As we prepare for another exciting fall sports season, FCPS is implementing additional safety and security measures at all varsity football games.
Beginning this season, all spectators will participate in security screenings using the same weapons detection technology introduced in our middle and high schools last school year. A standardized bag policy will also be in place to help ensure a safe, efficient entry process for everyone attending our games.
These enhancements are designed to support a safe and welcoming environment while allowing families, students, and community members to enjoy Friday night football. We encourage attendees to arrive a little earlier than usual to allow time for screening. Get more information about weapons screening at football games.

Community Conversations with Superintendent Reid
Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.
A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division. You are invited to share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions. Events are planned for the following dates at 6:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted):

Save the Date for the Annual Special Education Family Conference
The Annual Special Education Family Conference will take place on Saturday, November 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Hayfield Secondary School.
Hosted by FCPS and community partners, its theme — Connected Communities, Thriving Students — highlights the power of partnerships that support student success. This no-cost, in-person event brings together families, staff, and community partners to explore special education services, supports, and resources and to build meaningful connections.
The conference will feature an inspiring opening session, engaging breakout sessions, an exhibitor hall, and lunch for all participants. Visit the Special Education Family Conference webpage for the latest information.
