SCHS ATTENDANCE INFORMATION 2026-27

2-Hour Advance Notice Required: All early dismissal requests must be submitted at least two hours in advance. We will no longer process last-minute phone calls or messages for immediate pickup. Please plan appointments accordingly, as requests failing to meet this lead time will not be honored.

Illness & Clinic Protocol: If a student feels ill, they MUST report to the School Clinic. Students will only be dismissed for medical reasons after being evaluated by the clinic staff and checked out from that location.

Official Office Check-Out: All students leaving early must physically check out through the Main Office. Any student who leaves campus without following this procedure will be marked with an unexcused absence.

Attendance Corrections: If a student is marked UNV for a specific period due to lateness or a clerical error, the student must speak with that teacher directly. The teacher will then update the attendance or notify the attendance team. The Attendance Offices will not alter period-specific attendance without teacher verification.
These procedures are in place to ensure student safety and a focused learning environment. We thank you for your cooperation and for helping us maintain an accurate and secure campus.

High Quality Instruction
A Masterpiece in Action!
I had the true pleasure of observing two outstanding teachers this week. Mrs. Grimes and Mrs. Caldwell worked together seamlessly to teach students about censorship and the OPTIC framework for analyzing art. Like skilled curators guiding visitors through a gallery, they created meaningful opportunities for students to reflect with tablemates and contribute to rich academic conversations with the entire class. Students remained engaged from start to finish, thoughtfully examining ideas and building upon one another’s perspectives. We are fortunate to have two exceptionally talented teachers whose collaboration makes learning at SoCo a true masterpiece.

SoCo Scholars Earn National Recognition
Congratulations to Annika Arora, Anthony Eck, Nathan Park, Joshua Kim, and Sneha Maya on earning Commended Student status in the National Merit Scholarship Program. This prestigious recognition celebrates their outstanding academic promise and exceptional performance on the PSAT assessment, with their scores earning placement in the top 50,000 in our country! We are proud to celebrate these SoCo scholars!
A Visit Worth Celebrating
We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Belin, president of the National Principals Association, for visiting SoCo and meeting with students and staff to learn what makes our school such a special place. Through rich conversations, Dr. Belin explored equity, student leadership, intervention systems, and many other important aspects of our school community. We are grateful for the time, thoughtfulness, and genuine interest Dr. Belin shared with our Stallions.
SoCo Voices, SoCo Leaders
Congratulations to the 16 students who joined me this week for our first Principal’s Feedback Forum meeting of the year. We had an inspiring conversation about their roles as student leaders and the positive impact they can make across our school community. Our first project, SoCo Belongs, will invite students to identify the trusted adults who support them in their lives. After a first successful meeting, I can’t wait to see what this group of student leaders does next!
Stallions Bring the Heat
Congratulations to our JV Field Hockey and Boys Varsity Volleyball teams for an exciting week of competitive play. Both teams demonstrated determination, teamwork, and Stallion spirit from start to finish. We are proud of the way they represented SoCo and look forward to cheering them on throughout the season!
Golfing Into Greatness
Congratulations to our golf team on hosting SoCo’s first Senior Night of the year! We proudly celebrated seniors Kamryn Garg and Mary Grace Andersen, honoring their dedication, leadership, and contributions to the program. It was especially nice to see so many students from other organizations coming out to celebrate these seniors, including our Boys Basketball team, SGA, and others. We are grateful for the memories they have helped create and wish them continued success in all that lies ahead!
Coach’s Corner
Fairfax County Public Schools has a new Multilingual Student Library this school year. The library currently has over 2,500 titles. Families that speak a language in their home other than English can borrow titles in their home language. In addition, if your student is enrolled in a World Language or learning a language outside of school, they can obtain titles in that language. Please have them visit the library to learn how to use this amazing resource and start checking out titles today!
StateFarm Club Spotlight
Looking for a welcoming place to relax, connect, and have fun after school? Our SoCo Social Club invites students to meet new people, prepare simple treats, enjoy snacks, and play games together. Whether you come with friends or on your own, everyone is welcome on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 3:00–4:00 p.m. in Room C200; for more information, please contact the club sponsor, Heather Frost.

Congratulations to everyone observing Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism and a time for reflection and prayer. In recognition of this important holiday, school will be closed on Monday, September 21, 2026. We wish all who are observing a meaningful and peaceful Yom Kippur.

SCHS National Honor Society
On Saturday, Aug 29, invitations to apply for membership in the SCHS chapter of the NHS were sent to eligible students. They were sent by email to students’ FCPS account, and a notification of this invitation was posted on Schoology. To be eligible to apply, students must be enrolled in Grade 10, 11, or 12 and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. The deadline to complete and submit applications is Sunday, Sept 27 at 8:00pm. Students can find more information about the SCHS chapter on the South County NHS Google Site (only FPCS students will have access). If you believe your student was overlooked, please contact glbigus@fcps.edu as soon as possible.
Wednesday, October 7 – PSAT/ SAT School Day
October 7 is a 2-hour early release day for high schools and secondary schools. Students at SCHS will be released at 12:55 PM.
- Grade 12 students who registered in advance will be taking the SAT School Day test.
- Grade 10-11 students take the PSAT/NMSQT, with limited exceptions
- Grade 9 students and Grade 12 students choosing not to take the SAT School Daty test do not attend school this day and will be marked as an “unscheduled day” in SIS
- High school academy courses and all high school shuttles will be canceled on this day.
- Students can be checked out after testing is completed IN ADVANCE via the digital PSAT/SAT School Day Early Check Out Form . This form must be submitted by Monday October 5th, 2026, no later than 11:59PM. Same-day early checkouts will not be allowed.

Tag Day is TOMORROW, Saturday, September 19!!
Tag Day is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the South County Performing Arts Department. It takes thousands of dollars more than the fees that are charged for each group to keep our band, orchestra, choir, and theater programs running at the high levels we are accustomed to. To keep our fees low and keep the performing arts in our schools, we depend on contributions from our incredible community.
Student teams will be coming to your door TOMORROW, Saturday, September 19 asking for tax-deductible contributions to “Support the Arts.” Thank you in advance to everyone who donates to our Performing Arts department!
